So what is business and conference interpreting?
In brief, our role involves simplifying communication at international meetings, regardless of the native languages of the participants and speakers. Our professional interpreters ensure that the choice of words, the nuances and the technical terms are conveyed in full. Our job is to ensure that you get the best interpreting solution for each individual occasion, whatever the language, type of meeting and location, and we ensure that any necessary adaptations are made in order to achieve this.
We enable all participants to express themselves in their native language and to listen to a language they fully understand. This type of interpreting is suitable for various kinds of meetings, such as scientific conferences, product launches, negotiations, seminars, delegation visits, AGMs, board meetings, press conferences and training sessions. Our customers are therefore a mixture of authorities, importers and exporters, organisations and associations, universities and colleges, legal firms and event management companies, and so on. Some are Swedish, and some are based abroad. It is the meeting situation rather than the number of participants that determines what a business and conference interpreter can facilitate.
What does it involve in practice?
In concrete terms, our job is to deal with everything that relates to interpreting so that our customers can concentrate on the actual meeting. (We book interpreters as well as the technical equipment, hotel accommodation, travel, etc. that they need in order to complete their assignment.)
We have a very large and unique network of quality-assured interpreters. At conferences, for example, we work with simultaneous interpreters who are members of the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC). These interpreters are well qualified after many years of conference interpreting, and often have experience of working at the various EU institutions.
How does an interpreter work in these contexts?
A business interpreter works in contexts such as business negotiations, study visits or training sessions. Here, the most common method is dialogue interpreting, whereby the interpreter interprets several sentences at a time. In certain situations, whispered simultaneous interpreting is preferable. This involves the interpreter quietly interpreting while the speaker speaks. If an interpreter will be carrying out whispered interpreting for several people at the same time, portable equipment is generally needed.
Conference interpreting is mainly carried out at conferences and other meetings with many participants where there is a need for interpreting in more than one language direction. The most effective and most straightforward solution in such situations is simultaneous interpreting where the interpreters sit in soundproof booths and interpret while the speaker speaks. The listeners hear the interpreted speech through personal headphones at the same time as the original speech.
