Work experience as a complement to translation training

My name is Paulina Bartkowiak and I’ve recently completed my bachelor’s degree in translation at Stockholm University’s Institute for Interpreting and Translation Studies. As a complement to my theoretical translation studies I completed a work experience placement at Semantix, the Nordic region’s largest language service provider.

Here are my thoughts on work experience as a complement to translation training. Studying a course in translation studies gives you a sound foundation and good theoretical knowledge for future work as a translator. As well as learning how to translate (which involves much more than just reproducing a text word for word), you will also learn about how translators work and how to run your own business. To get an even better impression of the job market, you can also supplement your theoretical studies with a work experience placement. This gives you the opportunity to combine the theoretical knowledge gained during your studies with practical work situations. You’ll also gain a better understanding of the industry and what customers want, and this is a fun and rewarding way of making new contacts for your future career.

I would thoroughly recommend applying for a work placement as a complement to translation studies. Following my work placement I was given a job at Semantix, which goes to show that my placement certainly paid off!

In my next blog post, I’ll be giving some tips on how a translator can go about attracting a potential customer’s interest.
