3 things you need to know about CAT tools

CAT stands for computer assisted translation or computer aided translation, and is a collective name for various tools that have been developed to assist translators in their work. Their basic function is the ability to import documents in different formats, segmenting the text into sentences or paragraphs. Once these segments have been translated, the translation can be exported back into the same format as the original text.

What’s so great about CAT tools?

When the translator starts work using the tool, the translations are saved in a translation memory. So when the same segment crops up again, and has therefore already been translated, this clever little tool suggests inserting the earlier translation. It’s a bit like a match on Tinder – the translator can ‘swipe’ yes or no.

Another extremely useful function is that you can import your own glossaries into the software. So if, for example, you decide to call your product or service supersmart solutions, the translator can ensure that it is always translated the same way. Using uniform language in all your texts will strengthen your company’s profile and brand. Texts will be consistent. My texts would certain lose some of their sparkle if a different translator were to call my ‘supersmart solutions’ something completely different.

But there are also even more advantages! Once the translation work is finished, you can mash it all together like a snowball and create a target document with exactly the same formatting as the source document. So you can avoid copying, pasting and fixing. That’s so 90s!

Which CAT tools does Semantix use?

We mainly work with SDL products (WorldServer, Trados Studio and Passolo) and Memsource, but we can also use other CAT tools if required. Flexible is the new black.
